Food connects
Food connects people. Sometimes more than many words ever could.
The story of Joseph Awuah-Darko and the Last Supper Project
Last week I read in the New York Times about Joseph Awuah-Darko, an artist from Ghana. He had reached a point where he no longer wanted to live. When he shared this publicly, a stranger spontaneously invited him to dinner.
A simple gesture – despite the sad occasion.
One evening.
With home-cooked food.
And an encounter with a stranger.
Joseph repeated this experience. Several times. This led to the "Last Supper Project" —a table where he still sits with strangers, breaks bread, talks, and is less alone for a few hours.
Today Joseph says: These evenings changed his life.
Why this story moves me
Because it shows what can happen when we communicate.
And because it reminded me of evenings I truly miss:
When I lived in Milan, ten or fifteen people would squeeze into my small 20-square-meter apartment. We cooked, ate, listened to music, and had conversations without an agenda. Everyone brought something. There were always new faces, some of whom are still friends today.
It was a good time.
Food connects people – that's also our mission at Connecting Humans
I believe we need more of this again. Not out of nostalgia, but out of a love for good food, interesting people, and genuine encounters.
Food connects people. It slows us down. It creates space that we otherwise rarely take for ourselves.
Our mission at Connecting Humans fits perfectly with this. That's why Katharina and I want to launch a new format this fall:
👉 The Connecting Humans Dinner
A dinner format for meeting and exchanging ideas
This dinner is for people who want to broaden their horizons – and who can give something to each other. In real life, not virtually.
Active listeners are wanted.
Passionate storytellers are welcome.
First in Hamburg, later perhaps in other cities as well.
We've already had one or two young pilots, for example John Stepper and Michael Trautmann. They've whetted our appetite for more.
Perhaps it will be a culinary evening full of exchange.
Perhaps a themed evening with an exciting discussion.
Perhaps a space for listening – more than for talking.
In any case, you need a good table where you'll want to stay as long as the others are there too.
Your ideas for the Connecting Humans Dinner
The ideas are diverse – but not yet finalized.
👉 What would you wish for on such an evening – besides good food?
👉 Why should you participate and what would you contribute?
We are eager to hear your thoughts and ideas.
